JOB DESCRIPTION

A Mental Health Support Worker plays a key role in providing care and support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the support worker helps individuals develop coping strategies, fosters a positive and supportive environment, and contributes to their overall mental well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements. In most cases workers will be required to register with the appropriate statutory body which involves satisfying the registration criteria. This would normally include holding or working towards the appropriate qualification for the job. Entrants must typically be 18 years old and have experience of working in a care environment. Both Off and on-the-job training is available. A wide range of qualifications including NVQs/SVQs covering various aspects of care are available. Background checks including a DBS check are likely to be required.

TASKS

  • Provide person-centred care and support tailored to the unique needs and preferences of each individual..
  • Encourage autonomy and empower individuals in their mental health recovery journey..
  • Assist in managing and de-escalating crisis situations, following established protocols..
  • Collaborate with the mental health team to implement crisis intervention plans..
  • Support individuals with daily activities, including personal care, meal preparation, and maintaining a clean living environment..
  • Encourage and assist with the development of daily routines..
  • Facilitate or assist with therapeutic activities, group sessions, and recreational pursuits..
  • Implement activities that promote social interaction and mental well-being..
  • Assist individuals with medication adherence, ensuring they take prescribed medications as directed..
  • Monitor and report any side effects or concerns to the nursing or medical staff..
  • Contribute to the development and review of individualized care plans in collaboration with the mental health team..
  • Participate in care planning meetings and provide valuable insights..
  • Monitor and document changes in individuals' mental and emotional states..
  • Communicate observations to the mental health team, contributing to ongoing assessment and care adjustments..
  • Advocate for the rights and choices of individuals, ensuring their voices are heard in the decision-making process..
  • Support individuals in accessing appropriate mental health services and resources..
  • Foster positive and open communication with individuals, their families, and the wider mental health team..
  • Act as a liaison between individuals and other healthcare professionals..
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills..
  • Stay informed about advancements in mental health care practices..
